At the time of writing, the Nikon D3x is selling for $8,000, and the street price for the Nikon D3 is just over $4,000. The Nikon D3 has been out for almost 18 months now, so it's about due a refresh. Why? to keep the flagship sports/photojournalist camera at the forefront, plus it gives them an excuse to push the street price back up to the $5k mark while also helping support the Nikon D3x price tag.
Based on naming conventions used previously in the pro line of Nikon DSLR, we'd expect this camera to be called the Nikon D3h. What can they update? The 2 Gb memory upgrade than they can currently do for the Nikon D3 (for $500) will probably come standard. The newer, improved EXPEED processors from the D3x will probably be added (this should give a small bump in both image quality and battery life). 1080p Video may be added also, although that may cause problems (see Legal Issues adding video to Pro DSLR's?). When the Nikon D90 was released, it contained an updated version of the Nikon D300 sensor, so it's possible the sensor will have small improvements also.
