Rumor: Nikon D3h

Email Page | Comments

At the time of writing, the Nikon D3x is selling for $8,000, and the street price for the Nikon D3 is just over $4,000. The Nikon D3 has been out for almost 18 months now, so it's about due a refresh. Why? to keep the flagship sports/photojournalist camera at the forefront, plus it gives them an excuse to push the street price back up to the $5k mark while also helping support the Nikon D3x price tag.

Based on naming conventions used previously in the pro line of Nikon DSLR, we'd expect this camera to be called the Nikon D3h. What can they update? The 2 Gb memory upgrade than they can currently do for the Nikon D3 (for $500) will probably come standard. The newer, improved EXPEED processors from the D3x will probably be added (this should give a small bump in both image quality and battery life). 1080p Video may be added also, although that may cause problems (see Legal Issues adding video to Pro DSLR's?). When the Nikon D90 was released, it contained an updated version of the Nikon D300 sensor, so it's possible the sensor will have small improvements also.

Below are a list of rumors regarding the Nikon D3h, newest first. Please rate how credible you believe these to be, and feel free to add your own comments/thoughts. Nikon D3h Pics, Video on Youtube

A reader has emailed me pointing out 2 new videos on Youtube featuring a Nikon D3h prototype and demonstrating shooting modes. Here is a screen shot and the videos:

First Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwqaVOuLU6k

Second Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4L5-U7TB7U

Did some more digging on the people behind the video, may not be so credible...

A big thank you to the reader that emailed these.

Latest Status: Busted: At 4:30 into the video, the camera moves but the logo doesn't

D3 Update in Autumn

Rating: 2/5, Votes: 2

According to NR, the successor to the Nikon D3 (likely called either the D3s or D3h) will come this Autumn, still at 12mp, but with a dust shaker.

July 30 or August 4

According to the google translation of a page on kamerabild.se, Nikon have set press conferences for July 30 and August 4, suggesting that 2 DSLR's will be announced a week apart. One is likely the D300s, the other either a D60 replacement or possibly the anticipated D3 update.

D3 Production Ceased?

From a poster on DPReview:

"Today I had a chat with a friend of mine that owns the biggest local photo retailer and he told me that this rumor is mainly due to the fact that all photo retailers here cannot place orders for D3 anymore. D3 was not the distribution lists received from local distributor by all local retailers for orders."

Note, this was posted just before the Nikon D3x announcement, but since the Nikon D3x is aimed at a very different market than the Nikon D3, then this could have one of several meanings:

  • Nikon has excess inventory of D3's, so has temporarily halted production.
  • Nikon temporarily switched production to the D3x for its launch and will resume D3 production shortly.
  • An update to the Nikon D3 is coming, and production has switched to that.
  • The rumor is just plain false.
