New Gimbals From Wimberley

Wimberley have just sent out a news release, a full copy of which can be found below. Wimberley makes outstanding products, we've used their Sidekick and Telephoto Flash Brackets extensively in all weathers, and their Gimbal products are relied upon by many of the big-name pro's. The new product set introduces a Side-Mount Gimbal.

The case for using side-mounted gimbals is compelling: not only do you have to haul around less weight (the side-mount is about a full pound lighter), but it also has better vibration control (by eliminating an arm from a full gimbal setup, and thus the vibration associated with it). On the downside, you loose the height adjustment to perfectly balance your lens, and it can be harder to mount larger telephoto lenses in a side mount Gimbal.

In addition to the new Side-Mount Gimbal, Wimberley have also released a kit to convert your existing Wimberley Version II Gimbal into a Side Mount, and an arm to allow the Side Mount to be used as a full Gimbal, covering all the bases.

Wimberley F-1 Telephoto Flash Bracket

The Wimberley F-1 Telephoto Flash Bracket attaches directly the Arca-Type lens plate of any telephoto lens (so it works whether you are set up on ball head, a Gimbal like the Wimberley Head, or even resting on a bean bag). Because of its modular design, it can also be reconfigured to make a Wimberley F-6 Sidekick Bracket to work with the Wimberley Sidekick.

Being able to use a flashgun with your telephoto lens is ideal for putting a catch-light in a bird or animals eyes, or adding fill light to subject in the shadows, which can make or break a photograph. By attaching to the lens plate itself, the flashgun remains above the lens minimizing shadows, even when the camera is rotated to portrait orientation.

Designed specifically for use with the Wimberley Sidekick, the Wimberley F-6 Sidekick Bracket allows you to use a flashgun with the Wimberley Sidekick, perfect for putting a catch-light in a bird or animals eyes, or adding fill light (which can make or break a photograph). The Sidekick bracket keeps the flash lined up above the lens, even when the camera is rotated to portrait orientation to minimize shadows from the flash.

The bracket physically attaches to the Arca-Type lens foot/plate of your lens (and not the Sidekick itself), allowing you to put the bracket as far forward as possible. The bracket itself is modular, the Wimberley F-6 consists the M1 Quick Release Module and the M3 Tilt Arm Module, which separate easily for very compact storage.
Help Support DentonImages.com:

Please help support our site by clicking these links to start your online shopping: Amazon, B&H Photo Video, Adorama

Latest Nikon:

D5100: B&H
D3100: B&H, Amazon, $599.95
D7000: B&H, Amazon, $1,199.95

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR: B&H
AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR: B&H
AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR: B&H

Latest Canon:

S90: B&H
EOS T3 1100D: B&H, Amazon, $595.00
EOS T3i 600D: B&H, Amazon, $797.00

EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II: B&H, $2,449.95
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS: B&H, $329.95
EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM: B&H, $769.95

More Manufacturers:
Hasselblad • Leica • Olympus • Pentax • Sony

It costs you nothing to use these links, but the fees we earn from our affiliates help cover our costs and allow us to further expand our site.

If you own a telephoto lens big enough to warrant its own tripod collar/foot, then at some point you've probably figured out just how much of a pain it can be using a ball head with a heavy load - especially if you want to keep the horizon level while tracking a moving subject.

Fortunately, several companies make gimbal style heads that balance the lens, allowing smooth fingertip control (including panning and tilting) with even the heaviest of camera and lens combinations. However gimbal heads aren't ideal if you also want to use your tripod with non-collared lenses, unless you are prepared to change heads in the field or carry two tripods.

Wimberley C-10 (C-10MG) Quick Release Clamp

Most of the major tripod accessory manufacturers like Wimberley, Kirk and Really Right Stuff make Arca-Type Quick Release Adapters to convert your existing gear to work with Arca-Type quick release plate systems (which can include lens and camera plates, L-brackets, panoramic gear, focusing rails and so forth).

In our case, we had a Manfrotto 468MG ball head that we wanted to use primarily with a Wimberley Sidekick, and fortunately Wimberley makes a version of its C-10 Quick Release Clamp specifically for our ball head - the Wimberley C-10MG.
