(Oct. 14, 2009) - Nikon Inc., today introduced the new medium telephoto AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens designed specifically for extreme close-up photography, yet perfectly suited for portrait, nature, and general imaging as well. Focusing as close as 0.9 ft., this new 85mm Micro lens allows photographers to capture breathtaking close-up images with life-size reproduction ratios up to 1:1, helping to ensure that even the subtlest of subject detail is reproduced faithfully. The new 85mm Micro NIKKOR lens, in conjunction with Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras, renders a picture angle equivalent of approximately 127.5mm (in the 35mm or FX-format), providing a natural perspective along with a desirable and practical lens-to-subject working distance.

The NIKKOR Advantage

This lens also incorporates the benefit of Vibration Reduction (II) Image Stabilization technology, which gives photographers the ability to shoot at shutter speeds up to four stops* slower than would otherwise be possible, while dramatically reducing the image blur caused by camera shake in handheld photography. Nikon VR image stabilization is specifically engineered for each lens into which it is incorporated, ensuring optimum image stabilization benefit. And, unlike camera body-based approaches to image stabilization, Nikon lens-based VR also stabilizes the camera's viewfinder image, making composing and capturing images and movies less fatiguing.

Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides fast, quiet and accurate autofocus performance and Nikon's Internal Focusing (IF) design further enhances AF performance, while also allowing photographers to manually focus quickly and smoothly. Additional benefits to Internal Focusing include the elimination of both front lens element rotation and changes in lens length during focusing. A constant lens length improves balance and overall handling, while doing away with front element rotation makes the use of front-mounted accessories such as polarizers or the Nikon Wireless Close-up Speedlight System much more convenient.

Optical construction consists of 14 elements in 10 groups, while the addition of an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element minimizes chromatic aberration, enhancing the lens' ability to deliver stunning, high-contrast images with accurate and well saturated colors. Nikon Once Again Redefines Possibilities with D-SLR Photography with Six-Figure ISO Sensitivity for Stills and Video While Enhancing Overall Performance

(Oct. 14, 2009) - Today, Nikon Inc. announced the FX-format D3S D-SLR, providing professional photographers with a powerful tool that redefines the boundaries of digital SLR versatility, while maintaining the strength of superior image quality and high speed performance inherited from the groundbreaking D3. The D3S enables not only new opportunities in low-light photography, but also provides photographers with added shutter speed and aperture freedom with a base ISO sensitivity range from ISO 200 to a remarkable 12,800. Additionally, expanded ISO equivalent settings up to a staggering 102,400 are available, enabling photographers to create images previously thought impossible.

The Nikon D3S builds upon the success of the Nikon D3-the professional digital SLR that set new standards for D-SLR performance and utilizes a newly designed, Nikon original 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor that also integrates its amazing low-light ability to High Definition (HD) video, creating a uniquely capable multi-media tool to meet the needs of a changing imaging landscape.

Creative Vision Beyond the Human Eye

This industry-first, groundbreaking ISO sensitivity range will make the D3S the camera of choice for photographers who typically face extreme lighting challenges, such as indoor or nighttime sports, spot news, wedding receptions and ambitious nature photography. This broad ISO sensitivity also affords the ability to shoot at faster, action-stopping shutter speeds. D3S shooters will enjoy a major advantage in any situation where light is limited and the use of supplemental lighting is not an option. For the photojournalist, even the highest ISO setting delivers image quality to satisfy the needs of offset printing.

Big Pixels Equal Greater ISO Capabilities

The Nikon D3S adds the extra benefit of an Image Sensor Cleaning function to reduce instances of image degradation resulting from dust accumulation on the optical low pass filter (OLPF) in front of the image sensor. The OLPF oscillates at four specific frequencies to release particles that would disrupt image quality. Sensor Cleaning can be set by the user to cycle automatically when the camera is powered on, turned off, or on demand.

Share the Vision with D-Movie Creativity

Photographers and film makers alike will appreciate the full aperture control from a wide f/1.4 to f/16, as the FX-format sensor renders low-noise movie clips with outstanding clarity, aided by the large selection of renowned NIKKOR lenses to produce a dramatic depth of field. High Sensitivity Movie Mode allows the utilization of the entire ISO range to capture otherwise hidden details in challenging lighting conditions, more effectively than cameras with smaller sensors. Now, users can benefit from available natural light for applications such as telling a story in a journalistic style in the field or to create a gritty film noir masterpiece without CGI post production. While recording, users also have the ability to control exposure, and will enjoy the added benefits of improved contrast-detect type AF while in Tripod Live View mode.

Performance and Features Defining Versatility

The D3S also features two UDMA compatible CompactFlash card slots that can be used for consecutive recording (overflow), simultaneous recording (backup), separating recording of RAW and JPEG files or even copying pictures between the two cards. One or both can also be designated for data-heavy D-Movie recording. Images can be displayed directly from the camera to a High Definition monitor using the camera's HDMI port and an optional cable.

The D3S features Nikon's exclusive Multi-CAM 3500FX focus module, with 51 AF points, 15 cross type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors that easily track and lock onto moving subjects, delivering the same fast and accurate AF performance that helped make the D3 immediately successful. Users can select any of the AF points, making it easy to consistently attain accurate focus, frame after frame. Additionally, three AF-area modes - Single point, Dynamic-area AF and Auto-area AF - are available to maximize the use of the 51 focus points by selecting the most suitable one to match subject conditions. AF is also available in one of two Live View modes, including a phase detection handheld mode and a tripod mode. While in Live View, the graphic indication of a virtual horizon is also available, making it easier than ever to confirm camera orientation.

To alleviate another kind of noise, the D3S also features a Quiet Shutter Mode which substantially reduces the sound of the camera's mirror-down cycle, which is perfect for shooting in sensitive environments, such as movie sets, meetings, ceremonies, or while photographing wildlife.

Technologies Engineered for Professionals

The D3S' accelerated Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance detection and autofocus calculations. The Scene Recognition System also assists autofocus by tracking subject position and automatically shifts the AF points used to match the subject's movement within the frame.

Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II assists in ensuring accurate exposures, even in the most challenging lighting conditions. Instantly evaluating each scene before capture, input data from the system's sensor is automatically referenced against an internal database of more than 30,000 images derived from actual photographs to calculate correct exposure values. Active D-Lighting (ADL), used in combination with 3D Matrix Metering II, helps to determine proper exposure, and creates realistic contrast while compensating for lost shadows and highlights. Photographers can also use ADL bracketing for up to five frames of ADL compensation.

To further enhance each photographer's expression of personal style, Nikon's Picture Control System allows selection of Picture Control settings including Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. Additionally, adjustment can be made to Picture Controls to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation, hue and more. Photographers then have the flexibility to save up to nine personalized Picture Controls on camera and 99 additional Picture Controls externally.

Ready for Work

A bright and accurate viewfinder provides 100-percent coverage with 0.7x magnification. The body also houses Nikon's acclaimed 921,000-dot, 3.0-inch super density LCD monitor which is viewable up to 170 degrees, and is safeguarded by a tempered glass cover. Thanks to incredibly efficient internal circuitry, the D3S can capture up to 4200* shots per single charge of the camera's Lithium-ion battery.

At this point though, all we are seeing is speculation - the D700 was announced in the summer of 2008, so we'd expect 18-24 months to pass before a D700s announcement, so if it does happen, the end of 2009 would be the very earliest we'd expect it, with spring 2010 being much more likely.

Total production of NIKKOR lenses reached forty-five million in August 2008 with production of an additional five million over the past year.

Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first NIKKOR lens for Nikon SLR cameras, the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2, in 1959 along with its first SLR camera, the Nikon F. In the fifty years since then, NIKKOR lenses have been extremely well received by a great number of photo enthusiasts and professional photographers.

The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a wide variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses and micro lenses.

All four cameras are capable of producing professional results; it's hard to go wrong with any of them.

If you shoot sports/action, forget the D90 - buffers to small. The D200 isn't a bad choice, but the D300/D700 are much better choices due to a superior AF system, faster card write speeds and higher frame rates.

If you are a low light shooter, D700 is by far the best choice. The D300 is a better second choice than the D90 - the D90 may have a slight edge in ultimate image quality, but its autofocus system lets it down in low light compared to the D300. The D200 comes a distant 4th here.

If the camera is going to go into harsher environments, forget the D90 - plastic body and lack of weather-sealing may impact you.

For everyone else, any of these cameras are capable of outstanding results. The Nikon D90 is the smallest and easiest to use, and the Nikon D700 is probably the best all-rounder for a more advanced user that doesn't mind the extra weight and cost.

Indeed, if Samsungs prediction that Hybrid cameras will make up over 20% global digital still camera market by 2012 are true, it is a segment Nikon simply cannot ignore.

There have been numerous complaints and forum discussions regarding the edge sharpness of the existing 70-200mm on FX format DSLR's, so presumably this lens addresses that, plus adds the Nano coating, which should make this a spectactular lens. It also sees a large bump up in price over the version it's replacing - last year before the recent price increases the existing 70-200 could be bought for $1,700 or less, this new lens comes in at $2,400.

The new 18-200 adds a zoom lock - many users (myself included) have had issues with zoom creep: if you are not holding the camera horizontally, the weight of the zoom can cause the lens to zoom out or in on its own - not so bad if you are taking pictures with your left hand on the zoom, but requires rubber bands or tape if you are shooting on a tripod. The new version solves this with a zoom lock.

• Not the sensor - it appears the 10.2 Mp sensor that was introduced with the D200 several years ago (and variants of which were subsequently used in the D80, D40x, D60 and now D3000) isn't ready to be retired just yet.
• No video mode - no surprise there on the entry level body. However a "Stop Motion Movie Mode" is available, basically stitching a series of still shots together.
• 230k dot LCD - anyone that has used a 900k dot LCD would never go back, but perfectly usable.
• Guide Mode - looks like a basic online guide built into the menu system for newbies.

Should be a solid little camera, great for a first DSLR.

Small in Size, Big on Features

The major upgrades over the D300:

• Movie mode - 720p, 24 f.p.s. with contrast detect Autofocus and stereo input jack - Nikon's most advanced AF system yet, but still not 1080p, which will turn some people off.
• 7 f.p.s. with stock battery, up from 6 f.p.s. - most people that care about frame rate are using the massively popular MB-D10 anyway, which gives 8 f.p.s. on both cameras.
• SD memory card - note, the fastest SD memory cards are still slower than the fastest CF cards, so if you want max burst rates your still going to be using the CF card, however having the SD card set as a backup, or for recording video makes a lot of sense. It is also convenient, since many laptops these days come with a built in SD reader.

Bottom line, if your upgrading, switching brands, or getting your first DSLR, then this should be a great performer. If you want Nikon's most advanced video-enabled DSLR, then this is it (for now). If you already have a Nikon D300, there isn't a whole lot here to get excited about unless you need video (and even if you do, $1,800 less the trade in value of your current D300 would likely buy you a 1080p dedicated camcorder that will output better results in most circumstances).

With the D300s, Nikon introduces the ability to bracket Active D-Lighting (ADL). Additionally, the D300s features two memory card slots-one CF and one SD, used simultaneously in a variety of configurations to match users' preferences. The D300s offers "overflow" or "backup" modes, and when shooting D-Movie clips, it allows you to select the slot containing the card with the most available capacity. Austin has recently installed its first red light cameras, and a local TV station KEYE zoomed in on a red light camera (below), and holy crap, I could get a ticket thanks to Nikon! This appears to also be a Nikon D2xs, although I don't recognize the lens.

I was planning to go get a better picture, but can just imagine the headline "Local Photographer arrested while photographing Red Light Camera".

There is no state income tax in Texas, but apparently some of the other taxes (sales, property, business etc) we pay end up equipping traffic cameras with better Nikon gear than most local photographers use.

Plenty of others have put these DSLR's through their labs, while others have reviewed sample cameras over a period of a few days. What follows in this article, are field test/reviews based on using and traveling with the mid range Nikon DSLR's (D90, D200, D300 and D700) in varying conditions over periods ranging from many months to several years, and covering from thousands to many tens of thousands of exposures.

For anyone considering purchasing one of these cameras, we always recommend reading as many reviews as possible - reviews often contain personal experiences and biases, and even though bodies are all most likely within tolerance, there can also be minor differences between bodies and with certain body/lens combinations that effect an individuals results (or least that's always a good excuse to use as to why your pictures aren't sharp enough!).

This review will focus on the cameras we have used day in and day out, rain or shine, over the past few years: the Nikon D200, D300, D700 and D90.

Background

I do travel a lot, so whatever equipment I use needs to be able to take some abuse - from being bounced around during extended off road driving, dealing with dust, sand, sea spray, the triple digit summer Texas heat, to camping half way up a mountain in 15F weather: whatever the conditions, the gear needs to perform.

For the first 20 years of using Nikon, I owned exactly four Nikon film bodies, so in 2006 when I decided to make the switch to digital, I looked long and hard at their lineup and digital history: a modern DSLR gets replaced or updated every couple of years as technology moves forward - a far cry from my 30+ year old Nikon F that could still use the latest films. As a result, the sheer thought of paying $4k-$5k per body for the current pro-level DSLR's, then likely replacing them every 4 years as major upgrades came out made my wallet ache.

The math is quite simple: if I pay $12k-$15k for 3 bodies that means $3k-$4k per year on bodies that on average get replaced every 4 years. Ouch. Don't even want to broach that one with She Who Must Be Obeyed.

By going with the mid-range bodies, I lose a little in performance (8 f.p.s. vs 9 f.p.s., and not quite as rugged for example), gain some (more portability, flash/built in flash commander), and have to deal with a few months delay before new technology comes available to me: the sensor out of the D3 was released in the D700 several months later giving the same final image quality and a very large percentage of the ultimate camera performance.

However for a 3 body mid-range setup, I'm looking at saving anywhere up to $2k per year: Over ten years, that saves me $20k. Holy cow, that's the equivalent of getting the following lenses for free: 600mm f/4, 200-400mm f4, and the three kings (14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses) - now that's compelling. Alternatively, having the extra cash for lenses, lighting gear, travel, classes, or generally keeping your spouse happier makes a real difference, and will almost certainly do more for your photography than having the better bodies/getting the newer sensors a few months sooner. At the end of the day, it's the images that count, not the gear. As an added benefit, the lenses generally have a much better resale value than out-of-date bodies also.

So the decision was simple: Mid-range bodies with pro glass will get the results I demand at a cost I can live with. As any pro photographer will tell you, you have to look hard at the cost/value of your gear in relation to the income it can generate, and even then, the key number to look at is your profit (sales less expenses), not just sales. If you are not a pro, very few of us have unlimited budgets, so while it's nice to have the latest, greatest and very best, you can still do a lot to maximize your end results within your budget.

The Cameras

Nikon D200 Back in 2006 rather than spending $3,500 on a D2x, a Nikon D200 became our first Digital SLR. While slightly inferior to the D2x, the Nikon D200 was less than half the price, and this turned out to be exactly the right move when a year later the D300 came out effectively making the D2xs obsolete for many users for a lot less money (How happy would you be if you'd just spent $12k on three D2xs bodies and then the D300 came out?). Even in 2009, the Nikon D200 is still a strong performer, capable of getting outstanding results at ISO 100 and 200, and has remained in heavy use as a reliable second/backup camera for us into 2009.

Nikon D300 A D300 was added to our kit in late 2007. The D300 with a Nikon MB-D10 grip instantly became my primary camera, with the D200 relegated to a 2nd body/backup, and effectively took the mantle as the leading DX camera in Nikons lineup from the Nikon D2xs. With the D300 we can go to ISO 400 (and sometimes beyond), combined with its amazing AF system and 8 f.p.s., it produces a much higher keeper rate for action/wildlife photography than my Nikon D200 can. Almost two years on, it remains our go-to camera for any telephoto work, and we don't see that changing any time soon.

Nikon D90 In 2008, we added a D90 - the video mode was interesting, and the logic being it had a slightly improved version of the D300 sensor, so would potentially make a better backup/2nd body than the D200. The Nikon D90 is capable of producing some outstanding videos, but in terms of ultimate quality and ease of use, its video mode is no match for my Sony Camcorder on a day-to-day basis. Also being smaller/lighter, the D90 appeared to be a very versatile and capable camera to add to our kit, especially if traveling light. It also turned out to be the first DSLR that She Who Must Be Obeyed has ever felt comfortable using, due to its small size and Auto modes, so my biggest challenge with the D90 is often finding a way to pry it out of her hands. When I can get hold of it, it's a solid performer, although the camera has frustrated me at times - more on this in the review later.

Nikon D700 When the D700 initially came out, I initially discounted it - most of my work is telephoto, the D700 puts far fewer "pixels on target" with any given lens than any of the other cameras mentioned here, and I didn't really need the low light capabilities (For over 2 decades, I very rarely shot anything faster than ISO 200). However, as of early 2009, the D700 price had dropped by over 25%. Having a FX camera would be very useful for doing future lens reviews on this site, and its high ISO abilities would open up new opportunities for us on occasion, so I finally broke down and added a Nikon D700 and another MB-D10 grip to our kit - a decision I haven't regretted. Since buying the D700, the D300 remains my go-to camera for telephoto work (which is 80%+ of our photography), but the D700 has become the default camera for just about everything else, it has certainly exceeded my expectations. It also means the D200 is getting very little use these days.

Over the coming weeks we'll be adding full field reviews/tests for each of these cameras, detailing how they've performed and what issues I've experienced with each one, followed by ISO comparisons and some more direct comparisons and conclusions. We'll also periodically update these pages as the cameras continue to be used and abused, and add any new DSLR's that get added to our kit - the rumored D700x looks very interesting indeed, assuming I can sneak it in the house without the wife finding out.

While Nikon takes great measures to assure high quality in its imaging products, it has come to our attention that an electronic component related to power control in some Nikon D5000 digital SLR cameras does not meet factory specifications and may, in certain circumstances, prevent the camera from turning on, thus preventing operation of the camera.

Indications of this issue include:

As such, and despite the Canon EOS 50D being the newer camera, its street price dropped faster than the older Nikons. 10 months after its announcement, the gap in street price between the two cameras has actually increased to over $400 from $300.

• With firmware Ver. 1.11 and earlier, the number of images that could be captured (battery performance) when an EN-EL9a was used, was less than when an EN-EL9 was used.  By upgrading A firmware to Ver. 1.12, EN-EL9a performance is maximized so that more images can be captured (battery performance) when an EN-EL9a is used than when an EN-EL9 is used.  
• Number of shots possible (battery performance) with EN-EL9a (1,080 mAh)
• • Single-frame shooting mode:  Approximately 510 shots (with testing according to CIPA standards*)

Body Only available later for $729.99.

So whats so great about it? The flip down/rotatable LCD is the biggest new feature, which will attract many to the camera. The Image Quality should be excellent given it has the same or derivative of the sensor used in the D90 and D300. More scene modes have been included, and it becomes the cheapest DSLR with HD Video capabilities.

So what's not to like? No 1080p video - the Canon T1i has it (albeit at only 20 f.p.s.), and it's 720p video is 24 f.p.s. verses 30 f.p.s. in the Canon T1i. The T1i also wins in the megapixel race - 15 megapixels vs 12 megapixels. The T1i is priced a little higher though.

A big point for me at least, is the LCD is only 230k dots (vs 900k dots on the Nikon D90 and above) - my D200 has 230k dots, and switching between the D300 and D200 you really notice the difference when reviewing pictures, the 900k dot screens make a huge difference.

Street prices for the Nikon D90 are dropping, for a little over a hundred dollars more personally I'd spend the extra and go for the Nikon D90 just for the higher resolution LCD alone.

The new Nikon D5000 should sell well as previous Nikon consumer models have, but I don't believe it will set the world alight - Canon still appears to have the edge on the newest battlefront: DSLR video. 1080p is the standard for TV's now, so until Nikon consumer models can support 1080p video, a lot of consumers looking for their first DSLR are going to go in Canons direction.

The 12-24mm DX has a street price that is virtually identical to the MSRP of the new lens. It gains a couple of mm on the wide end, a marginally faster aperture (and marginally slower at the 24mm end). However it loses the constant aperture zoom, and the Nikon Gold Band "Pro Lens" status.

If the new lens is as sharp and performs as well as the existing Pro 12-24mm lens, the extra couple of mm on the wide end will be a welcome addition. However if Nikon were looking to offer a mass market wide angle, then the price is wildly off - the Sigma 10-20mm lens has a street price of just over $400 - a $900 lens is a big investment for a consumer with a $500 DSLR.

At first glance, the swivel LCD will be popular, but the street price is close to the Nikon D90 (personally I'd get a D90 from what I've seen so far), and it lacks the 1080p mode that the new Canon T1i offers (the T1i only does 20 f.p.s. in 1080p, which is sub-standard, but especially at the entry level a lot of consumers make decisions based on spec lists).

We'll provide more details and get this new camera and lens in our database this morning, so check back soon for more details and opinion.

• When Cancel was clicked while opening multiple images that had been enhanced and then saved in NEF format with Capture NX 2, enhancement steps were removed from the Edit List for the images that did open. This issue has been resolved.
• When Capture NX Ver. 1.X was deleted after installing an upgrade version of Capture NX 2 and entering the Capture NX 2 product key, the dialog requesting the product key was displayed when Capture NX 2 was next started, but the OK button could not be clicked, even when the product key was entered again. This issue has been resolved.

• Support for Mac OS X version 10.5.6 has been added.
