Canon EOS 60D Review - Intro & Specs

The Canon EOS 60D was announced in August 2010, and is the 'advanced consumer' or 'enthusiast' model in Canon's DSLR lineup. The EOS 60D replaced the EOS 50D and continues a line of digital SLR cameras that began with the EOS 10D back in 2003. The 60D offers numerous improvements over the 50D it replaced, most notably a new 18mp sensor (up from the 50D's 15mp), improved low light/high ISO abilities and a new articulating LCD screen. Construction of the camera changed from the 50D's magnesium alloy body to a smaller and lighter polycarbonate resin with glass fibre body on an aluminum chassis. The 60D also ditches CompactFlash cards in favor of the smaller SD (or SDHC or SDXC) cards.

However the burst rate actually dropped to 5.3 frames per second (the 50D boasted 6.3 f.p.s.), and the micro-AF adjust feature, which allows you to compensate for lenses that either front or back focus, was dropped completely. As such the older 50D was often considered more of a 'prosumer' body, however that title now belongs to the Canon 7D, with the 60D slotting in underneath it as the 'enthusiast' model instead.

ISO Comparison - Nikon D7000, D700, D300 and Canon 60D, S90

Introduction

It's been about 18 months since we last did a side-by-side ISO test, so with some newer cameras available to us, here are some new results. All cameras were used in their default settings. The Nikons (D300, D700, D7000) all used the excellent 70-200mm f2.8 II lens at f/8. The Canon 60D used the only lens we have available, the kit 18-135mm also at f/8, which is perhaps not the best performer. The S90 used the built in lens zoomed out. All cameras used their on-board flash.

Unlike last time, when the D90 and D200 struggled to autofocus, all of the cameras in this test did a much better job (AF fine tune was not used).

We've attempted to frame all of the shots approximately the same (the one issue being the minimum focus distance of the 70-200mm was too long to let the D700 'get as close' to the test subject). In the last test, the cameras were all in the 10-12mp range, however in this test we have cameras at 10, 12, 16 and 18mp, meaning the center 100% crops appear at different sizes.

Nikon MH-19 Dual Travel Charger

The now discontinued MH-19 Dual Travel Charger from Nikon charges two EN-EL3e or EN-EL3 batteries, so works with just about every pro-sumer and advanced consumer body Nikon made up until the D7000. That includes many recent (as of the time of writing) cameras including the D200, D300, D300s, D700 and D90 - some of Nikons most popular models.

The MH-19 comes packages as shown above, in perhaps one of the ugliest boxes Nikon has ever made. It comes complete with two cables (at least the U.S. version does), one that plugs into the cigarette/power socket found in just about any car globally, and a power lead for mains power. The unit automagically detects the input voltage, so will work just about anywhere in the world (with appropriate plug adapter) with input voltages in the 110-240V AC, 50-60Hz range.

This alone makes the MH-19 a very versatile tool, especially for the traveler. It does have its drawbacks however. First of all, the unit is physically large, which makes it harder to pack and travel with. Secondly, if you put two batteries in the unit, it only charges them one at a time, and not particularly quickly. So if you can plug in two batteries to be charged and forget about it for a while, when you come back they both should be charged. But if you wanted to charge two at the same time and get back out shooting quickly, then you are out of luck.

Bottom line, the product works, and gives you a Nikon branded travel charger that will work just about anywhere on the planet, providing you stay close to your car or truck. However from a design perspective the unit would have a lot more appeal as a travel charger if it was significantly smaller, and preferably charged both batteries at once. Nikon Updates Disaster Status

Pretty much everyone is aware of the series of disasters that have struck Japan this month. Yesterday, as has been widely reported, Nikon issued a press release detailing both tragic human loss and giving details regarding the conditions and expectations of their plants and production in the affected area.

Unfortunately with the damaged nuclear reactors, this situation is still unfolding, so the effect of future product releases and availability of current products is largely unknown, but if you are looking to purchase Nikon equipment at any point this year, here are some things to consider:

Most of the "consumer" products (D7000 and below, DX lenses etc) are made in other countries, so should be largely unaffected (this assumes that they don't rely on components from the damaged area).
As of right now, the Sendai plant that produces the full frame bodies is still off line, with production expected to start by early April. However no indication has been given to the status of Nikon's numerous suppliers, many of which may also have been devastated by the sequence of events. CNN has posted today that Toyota may halt production at numerous US plants due to their inability to get critical components out of northern Japan. Nikon will be in the same position, and will currently be scrambling to assess the situation, source other suppliers, and in some cases move production elsewhere. This isn't a situation that will be resolved overnight, so production could be limited for weeks or months to come for certain products (primarily FX bodies and pro glass).
It is possible stockpiled inventory (in containers at the port or in warehouses waiting to ship) have been damaged or lost, further tightening the supply of certain products for the foreseeable future. Damage to ports will also limit shipping access and volume.
Should the nuclear disaster get significantly worse, radioactive contamination of products leaving Japan may become an issue (indeed, CNN reports that Nissan is already scanning incoming vehicles for radioactive material).

As a net result of this, we should expect the following:

The law of supply and demand will make its presence felt: Lower availability and therefore increased costs of FX bodies and pro lenses - a number of retailers have already reset prices back up to MSRP on many of these products, and depending how this plays out, prices could go higher and/or products become completely unavailable.
This year we are expecting a number of big releases from Nikon, including the D400, D800 and D4 bodies, which rely on the Sendai plant. There is a distinct possibility that these camera announcements may be delayed because of the unfolding events, and a very high probability that supply will be extremely limited when they are first announced (with the bulk of available inventory going to NPS Priority purchases).
Lower end products, like the expected D5100, shouldn't be impacted nearly as badly.

If you were planning on making larger purchases from Nikon (or other impacted manufacturers) later this year, or are waiting on the anticipated new products, it may be wise to rethink your plans. The situation is fluid, it may be several weeks more before we can even begin to accurately gauge the impact this is going to have on Nikon's ability to release new products, or attempt to meet consumer demand. In the mean time, our sincere condolences go to those who have lost loved ones in the area.

Custom Brackets Digital PRO-SV Camera Rotator

We recently reviewed the new Yuri Arcurs SteadyPod from Custom Brackets, and one of the components used to make the SteadyPod both really surprised and impressed us at the same time: the Digital PRO-SV Camera Rotator. Pictured above, the Rotator also has a Palm Grip installed, and is configured to be used with Arca-Swiss style tripod heads and camera plates (it can also be configured to use Custom Brackets proprietary clamp system instead if you prefer that over the Arca-style clamping systems). Since we use predominantly Arca-style systems, and most high-end ball heads come with Arca-style clamps, for the purposes of this review we'll use the Rotator set up as pictured.

Nikon and Canon in 2011 Part 2: Prosumer DSLR's

As of writing this, Nikon's prosumer offering consist of the excellent D700 and the aging D300s. The D700 is well past its second birthday, which makes it about 107 in camera years, and the D300s was a very modest update to the D300 (especially if you are not interested in video), which dates back to 2007.

Canon's prosumer offerings currently include the popular 5D Mark II and the much newer 7D.

With the exception of the 7D, the three other cameras in this segment, while all excellent performers, are almost certainly going to be updated before the end of 2011. Let's start with Nikon:

Nikon and Canon in 2011 Part 1: Pro DSLR's

Just when you thought true innovation had given way to product iteration, and manufacturers were resorting to adding non-core functionality (like DSLR Video) to try to expand the appeal of cameras, the game changes. The success of the mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (which were initially expected to threaten the entry level DSLR's, but instead got priced more in the mid-range), along with Sony's introduction of Pellicle mirrors into DSLR's, puts both Nikon and Canon under pressure, while also creating opportunities for them.

When predicting or speculating about future plans for Nikon and Canon, you must not forget the impact each companies products and release scheduling has on the other. Take for example Nikon releasing (possibly rushing) the D90 to market mere days before the release of the Canon 5D Mark II, so they could claim bragging rights as the first video-enabled DSLR; or the launch of the Nikon D3s with its amazing low light ability, to steal some of the thunder from the Canon 1D Mark IV announcement a week later.

Let's break the predictions down by target market, starting today with the pro cameras, and continuing over the next few days:

New 90° Block for Panoramic Photography

This is a replacement for the previous 90° block which we featured in our RRS & Hejnar Pano Head Review several months ago. This new block is slightly larger, and has additional tabs to eliminate the possibility of the rails twisting. The new block is available in two widths (1" is part number PART G-101A and 1 3/8" is part number PART G-102A).

New Arca-Style Rails with Ridge

These new rails with anti-twist ridges are available in 4" (part number C1-40, shown above), 4.25" (part number C1-425) and 3.5" (part number C1-350) lengths. These rails are ideal for mounting on smaller lens feet that feature a single tripod socket, and even on DSLR's.

New Arca-Style Rails without Ridge

This is a 4" Arca-Style rail with 2 captive screws, ideal for use with larger lenses that feature two or more tripod sockets in the lens foot. We use a similar lens plate from Hejnar PHOTO on our 70-200mm f2.8 - details here.

New Adapter for NIKON SC-29 Strobe Cord

The Nikon SC-29 Flash Cord has a wider base than just about any other flash cord on the market. Flash brackets from some manufacturers are adjustable to account for this (for example, the Custom Brackets GFM), however the majority of flash brackets from numerous manufacturers (including products from RRS and the Wimberley F-1) require you to purchase a separate adapter to make the SC-29 fit. For only $15, the Hejnar PHOTO Adapter screws to the bottom of the SC-29 cord's cold shoe and makes the cord compatible with these flash brackets.

New Hejnar PHOTO Quick Release Camcorder Plate

Nikon D7000 Announced

The D7000, the much anticipated update to the D90, has finally been announced. At first glance this is an impressive camera:

It features a 16.2mp CMOS sensor - Nikon's highest pixel density yet, and second highest resolution DSLR after the D3x.
Impressive ISO range (Nikon claims "low-light ability never before seen in a DX-format (APS-C) camera". Base ISO range is 100-6,400, with a hi-2 mode taking it to ISO 25,600 (yes, that is the same as the D700/D3, however it's yet to be seen exactly how well it compares). The ISO 100 base will be welcome for studio photographers wanting to eliminate ambient light.
Full 1080p video with full time AF, up to 20 minutes per clip.
14-bit image processing (the D90 was limited to 12 bit).
New 39-point AF system - if the D90 had an Achilles Heel, it was certainly its weak AF system.
The 6 f.p.s. matches an un-gripped D300, and is a big step up from the D90's 4.5 f.p.s.
The use of magnesium alloy components, a shutter rated for 150k exposures and dust and moisture sealing make the D7000 a step ahead of the D90 it replaces.
A 100% viewfinder is always welcome.
As are Twin SD card slots.

There are a couple of things we are less keen on however:

The $1,200 price point makes sense given the strength of the Yen and how well this camera stacks up to the new Canon 60D, but it is still $200 more than the original price of the D90 (and more like $400 more than current street prices) - this moves the camera firmly out of the critical sub $1,000 price point that the D90 enjoyed.
It has a new battery (EN-EL15), meaning it is less likely to be used as a backup camera for someone shooting a mid range body (one of the main advantages of the D90 was it used the same batteries as the D300/D700).
It appears to lack AF micro-adjustment.

Overall, this is a huge step forward from the D90, and in some ways it is superior to the D300s (the D7000 still appears to lack the AF micro-adjustment, and the D300s still enjoys the 51 point AF system for example). It is priced right in the middle of the current street prices for the D90 and D300s.

The D7000 also has implications for the D400 that is rumored to be launched next year. Presumably the D400 will re-use the same 16.2 mp sensor (or at least a slightly improved version), but have additional features like an improved AF system, AF micro adjustment, higher frame rates and so forth.

The Nikon D7000 is available for pre-order, and is expected to ship in October:

Canon EOS 60D, 6 Lenses, 2 Teleconverters

Today Canon has announced possibly the most anticipated and rumored camera ever, the 60D, as well as 6 new lenses and two teleconverters.

Highlights for the EOS 60D include an 18 megapixel sensor with base ISO range of 100-6,400 (extended range to ISO 12,800), a new 1 million dot tilt/swivel LCD, and full HD video (1080 in 24p, 25p or 30p). The max frame rate is a reasonable 5.3 f.p.s., and and it features a 9-point AF system. The camera should be available towards the end of September, with an M.S.R.P. of $1,099 (body only).

As for the lenses:

Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM - available January 2011, approx $1,400.
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM - available Late October, approx $1,500.
Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM - available December, approx $7,000.
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM - available December, approx $11,000.
Canon Extender EF 1.4x III - available December, approx $500.
Canon Extender EF 2x III - available December, approx $500.
500mm f4L IS II - prototype will be at Photokina, no word on pricing/availability.
600mm f4L IS II - prototype will be at Photokina, no word on pricing/availability.

Nikon is expected to announce the D90 replacement in the next few weeks (likely called the D7000), which should be priced about the same (the D90 was $999, rumors put the D7000 anywhere from $999 to $1,199), so these two cameras will be going pretty much head to head.

Nikon D3100 and Four New Lenses

The heavily rumored Nikon D3100 is now official, complete with 14mp sensor and focusing during 1080 video capture. This makes it both the most advanced DSLR video offering from Nikon, and the highest pixel density (meaning more pixels on target for telephoto users), despite being the bottom of the line camera effectively replacing the D3000.

It's still hampered by the slow 11-point AF system the D3000 had, but even so highlights how much the rest of the DX line needs updating (it out-specs the D5000, D90 and D300s on both megapixels and video).

As for the 4 new lenses, we have:

A new 85mm f1.4G (new optical design, AF-S focusing, nano coating, misses VR, but adds about $400 to street prices over the current at $1650). The current 85mm f1.4D is a lens I use a lot, and my only minor complaint is focusing speed when taking sports pictures in badly-lit gyms. For its main use as a portrait lens I'm personally very happy with my current results - this may be a lens I'd be interested in down the road if the focusing speed is noticeably improved.
An AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR, for 55-200mm users that want more reach. At $399.95 it is slightly cheaper than the excellent 70-300mm lens, and is presumably smaller since it works only with DX sensors (unlike the FX compatible 70-300mm). If it is up to the 70-300mm optically, this could be a very nice lens.
The AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR for FX users is roughly equivalent to the 18-200mm for DX users, so a good lens for people who don't want to change lenses. Will likely be popular with a lot of consumer D700 users, but any lens with that focal length range (almost 11x) is going to have a lot of compromises optically. M.S.R.P. is $1049.95.
Being a constant aperture 5x zoom, the AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR should optically be a much better walk-around lens for FX users than the 28-300mm, plus the extra 4mm on the wide end make a huge difference for street photography. Pair this lens with the current Nikon 70-300mm lens and you should have a very capable and relatively light-weight setup. M.S.R.P. is $1299.95, but for a lot of D700 and D3 series users, this will become their primary lens.

Overall a good step for Nikon - the D3000 didn't exactly set the world alight when it was announced last year, but the D3100 looks to be a big step forward, and instantly becomes Nikon's most advanced DSLR video offering, and highest pixel density camera.

For DX users, the 55-300mm should be a very interesting and affordable lens.

For FX users, the 85mm f1.4G is a specialized lens, although the current lens is superb, it remains to be seen how many people will upgrade. The Nano-coated 24-120mm is effectively a must-have for any prosumer or pro that wants a lighter walk-around lens that performs. The 28-300mm is for the more consumer oriented FX user that doesn't like carrying extra lenses and doesn't mind the f5.6 maximum aperture at the long end.

Low Light Photography Is About More Than High ISO

Since posting our Nikon D200, D90, D300 and D700 High ISO Comparison, we've had plenty of feedback. I touched on a very critical point in the comparison, which has sparked a lot of the feedback: it takes more than good high-ISO ability to make a great low-light camera.

Most ISO tests on the web are done in lab conditions, where everything is tightly controlled - lighting, focus (manual focusing to ensure sharp focus isn't uncommon), lens stopped down a little for maximum sharpness etc: basically all the variables are tightly controlled, so the only thing you are really varying is the ISO (and shutter speed). This is great, it gives the reader a very good indication of the output of the camera at High-ISO under optimal conditions. However what it doesn't do is tell you how well your camera is going to perform when you are shooting a concert, your kids school gym sports, or any other real world lighting condition - conditions that are typically far from optimal. If you are in a studio in a controlled environment you don't care about high ISO anyway, you should be shooting at the base ISO and cranking up the lights instead.

To make a great low light camera, a clean image at a high ISO value is one part of the equation - a very important one, but just one part. The cameras metering and autofocus need to perform too - a camera is a complex system made up of a sensor, autofocus system, metering system, and a bunch of other stuff that works together to capture and store the image.

Nikon ML-3 Remote Control

The Nikon ML-L3 acts as a remote shutter release for the pro and prosumer lines of Nikon DSLR's (D1 through D3 Series, and D100 through D700 Series cameras). The unit consists of two parts:

A receiver that screws into the 10-pin connector on the front of the camera, and has a hot-shoe plate so it can sit on top of the camera (we often find ourselves using a flash at the same time, so this unit is often left dangling instead).
A hand held transmitter that takes two AAA batteries.

A small carrying pouch is also included.

Nikon ML-L3 Remote Control

The Nikon ML-L3 acts as a remote shutter release for the consumer line of Nikon DSLR's (D40 through D90, and D3000 and D5000 series cameras). It's tiny, cheap (about $17 at time of writing), and pretty much essential for tripod users to minimize vibration.

The Nikon ML-L3 has a range of about 16' (just less than 5 meters), and has to be pointed at the front of the camera. We use ours with our Nikon D90 - 15 months in we are still on the first battery with light to moderate usage. It has been reliable in triggering the camera - if you are too far off to the side, sometimes it won't trigger (just like your TV remote), so on the rare occasion it's failed, it has been operator error.

Overall, if you have a consumer level Nikon DSLR (DXX or DXXXX, then this is extremely useful. If you ever use your camera on a tripod, the ML-L3 is pretty much essential, and we'd highly recommend it:

Today's photo enthusiast is looking for a camera that will grow with them as they learn, and that is a perfect description of the new EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera. Retaining all of the traditional characteristics that have made the EOS Rebel series beloved by entry-level photographers and an industry best-seller, the new Rebel T2i succeeds in bridging the gap between an entry-level camera and a true pro-sumer camera.

Lights, Rebel, Action - EOS HD Video

Canon's EOS HD video capture has helped spark a major movement in digital imaging, empowering still photographers with the ability to experiment, learn and capture stunning high-definition video through a variety of creative lenses. Continuing this imaging revolution, the new EOS Rebel T2i puts entry-level photographers on the frontline equipped with all the latest EOS HD video features including full HD video at 1920�1080 resolution, selectable frame rates, full manual exposure control and the visual options of interchangeable lenses. Manual video exposure control provides novice filmmakers with the image control they are accustomed to in a still camera, all while shooting professional-level cinematic video. Professional photographers utilize creative lighting, adjustable depth-of-field and a variety of lenses to create powerful still images and video footage, and these are exactly the tools that the new Rebel T2i gives to budding photo and video enthusiasts. Adding a new professional-level feature for EOS cameras, the Rebel T2i includes an Auto ISO function that works in all Creative Zone exposure modes including Manual where users can set a limit to the highest ISO the camera will use, enabling them to retain the lighting and look they desire for a scene. By setting an Auto ISO range, videographers can retain dark shadow areas and avoid blowing out highlight areas in a scene while still retaining the benefit of automatic ISO adjustments. The Rebel T2i DSLR captures video in both NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Altering Line) standards at selectable frame rates including Full HD 1920 x 1080 at 30 (29.97), 25 or 24 (23.976) fps, and HD 1280 x 720 or Standard Definition 640 x 480 quality video, at 60 (59.94) or 50 fps.

For easier video recording operation and familiar functionality for beginners, the Rebel T2i's autofocus can be operated before or during video recording by pressing the shutter button half-way down in video mode. Another feature debuting in the Rebel T2i is Canon's new Movie Crop mode, where the user can achieve 7x magnification when shooting SD video for a significantly increased "telephoto" effect. Unlike the digital zoom feature found in many compact digital cameras, Canon's new Movie Crop mode actually crops the image directly from the CMOS sensor at full SD resolution to preserve maximum image quality and provide additional zoom power. The new Movie Crop feature is especially helpful for achieving extra full resolution zoom power when filming youth sports, such as a child running to the furthest end of a field. For better sound quality when shooting video, the Rebel T2i DSLR includes an external stereo microphone jack, a first for an EOS Rebel model, in addition to its built-in monaural microphone. These audio and video features supplement a tremendous range of additional must-have video features in an entry-level Digital SLR camera.

For enhanced viewing pleasure and easy video sharing at home, the HDMI video-out capability of the Rebel T2i DSLR includes a new Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) compatibility which allows users to play back still or video files on a CEC-compliant HDTV, using the TV remote to control the camera when connected via HDMI interface.

Camera Feature Set

The EOS Rebel T2i DSLR features a newly developed 18-million-pixel Canon CMOS imaging sensor providing outstanding resolution and light sensitivity for amazing poster-sized prints with fine detail and stunning color. The camera exhibits exceptional low-noise performance incorporating many of the same technologies used to reduce noise in professional cameras such as the EOS 7D. The Rebel T2i camera's basic ISO range is an amazing 100~6400, and via a Custom Function, it can be extended to ISO 12,800. The outstanding ISO range combined with its noise reduction technology allows the Rebel T2i to capture outstanding low-light pictures at events such as candlelit birthday celebrations or recitals where flash photography may be prohibited.

The camera provides 3.7 fps continuous shooting for still photos, making it the fastest shooting Rebel model to date and enabling users to capture that great image of a little leaguer's first swing. The camera features Canon's proprietary iFCL 63-zone dual-layer metering system offering intelligent Evaluative metering with much finer segmentation than any previous EOS Rebel model. The new Rebel T2i also has an expanded � 5 EV exposure compensation range allowing for much more versatility when shooting in extremely bright or dark environments; or when shooting HDR (high dynamic range) images.

The Rebel T2i DSLR includes a number of professional-level user-selectable Canon image processing features to enhance the image quality of in-camera JPEG files, and to tag RAW images for processing later through Canon's Digital Photo Professional software (included with the camera). These features include Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer to enhance shadow detail and add contrast to "flat" scenes, Highlight Tone Priority adding up to one stop of detail in bright highlight areas, Peripheral Illumination Correction for automatic correction of vignetting, High ISO Noise Reduction with four user-selectable settings, and Long Exposure Noise Reduction applied to exposures one second or longer. These Canon image enhancements provide new photographers with professional quality automatic image correction on JPEG files right out of the camera.

The EOS Rebel T2i digital camera includes a new enhanced 3-inch LCD monitor featuring 1.04 million dots with a wide 3:2 aspect ratio, wider than previous EOS models. The Rebel T2i camera's LCD monitor can display a full-screen video image utilizing the entire screen during playback. For maximum storage capacity the new EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera is the first EOS model to support SDXC memory cards. Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers in early March, and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $799.99. It will also be offered in a kit version with Canon's EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $899.99.

Nikon MB-D10

Nikons Mid Range DSLRs - D200, D300, D90 and D700

Introduction

There are many reviewers out there, and many types of review. Plenty of others have put these DSLR's through their labs, while others have reviewed sample cameras over a period of a few days. What follows in this article, are field test/reviews based on using and traveling with the mid range Nikon DSLR's (D90, D200, D300 and D700) in varying conditions over periods ranging from many months to several years, and covering from thousands to many tens of thousands of exposures.

For anyone considering purchasing one of these cameras, we always recommend reading as many reviews as possible - reviews often contain personal experiences and biases, and even though bodies are all most likely within tolerance, there can also be minor differences between bodies and with certain body/lens combinations that effect an individuals results (or least that's always a good excuse to use as to why your pictures aren't sharp enough!).

This review will focus on the cameras we have used day in and day out, rain or shine, over the past few years: the Nikon D200, D300, D700 and D90.

Background

It's also important to understand where the reviewer is coming from, and what their expectations are in a given DSLR, because that will certainly impact their review. From my perspective, I've been shooting Nikon since the early 1980's, initially using a pair of bricks, also known as Nikon F Photomics, and adding a more advanced brick called a Nikon F3HP later. I nearly always shot slide film (usually Kodachrome 64), and occasionally Black & White (T-Max). Primarily I've always been interested in shooting wildlife and landscape, while also using the cameras to shoot general travel, motorsports, aviation, and occasional studio/portrait work. Plus the usual photos of my kids running round, documenting the chaos and destruction they tend to leave in their wake.

I do travel a lot, so whatever equipment I use needs to be able to take some abuse - from being bounced around during extended off road driving, dealing with dust, sand, sea spray, the triple digit summer Texas heat, to camping half way up a mountain in 15F weather: whatever the conditions, the gear needs to perform.

For the first 20 years of using Nikon, I owned exactly four Nikon film bodies, so in 2006 when I decided to make the switch to digital, I looked long and hard at their lineup and digital history: a modern DSLR gets replaced or updated every couple of years as technology moves forward - a far cry from my 30+ year old Nikon F that could still use the latest films. As a result, the sheer thought of paying $4k-$5k per body for the current pro-level DSLR's, then likely replacing them every 4 years as major upgrades came out made my wallet ache.

The math is quite simple: if I pay $12k-$15k for 3 bodies that means $3k-$4k per year on bodies that on average get replaced every 4 years. Ouch. Don't even want to broach that one with She Who Must Be Obeyed.

By going with the mid-range bodies, I lose a little in performance (8 f.p.s. vs 9 f.p.s., and not quite as rugged for example), gain some (more portability, flash/built in flash commander), and have to deal with a few months delay before new technology comes available to me: the sensor out of the D3 was released in the D700 several months later giving the same final image quality and a very large percentage of the ultimate camera performance.

However for a 3 body mid-range setup, I'm looking at saving anywhere up to $2k per year: Over ten years, that saves me $20k. Holy cow, that's the equivalent of getting the following lenses for free: 600mm f/4, 200-400mm f4, and the three kings (14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses) - now that's compelling. Alternatively, having the extra cash for lenses, lighting gear, travel, classes, or generally keeping your spouse happier makes a real difference, and will almost certainly do more for your photography than having the better bodies/getting the newer sensors a few months sooner. At the end of the day, it's the images that count, not the gear. As an added benefit, the lenses generally have a much better resale value than out-of-date bodies also.

So the decision was simple: Mid-range bodies with pro glass will get the results I demand at a cost I can live with. As any pro photographer will tell you, you have to look hard at the cost/value of your gear in relation to the income it can generate, and even then, the key number to look at is your profit (sales less expenses), not just sales. If you are not a pro, very few of us have unlimited budgets, so while it's nice to have the latest, greatest and very best, you can still do a lot to maximize your end results within your budget.

The Cameras

Nikon D200

Back in 2006 rather than spending $3,500 on a D2x, a Nikon D200 became our first Digital SLR. While slightly inferior to the D2x, the Nikon D200 was less than half the price, and this turned out to be exactly the right move when a year later the D300 came out effectively making the D2xs obsolete for many users for a lot less money (How happy would you be if you'd just spent $12k on three D2xs bodies and then the D300 came out?). Even in 2009, the Nikon D200 is still a strong performer, capable of getting outstanding results at ISO 100 and 200, and has remained in heavy use as a reliable second/backup camera for us into 2009.

Nikon D300

A D300 was added to our kit in late 2007. The D300 with a Nikon MB-D10 grip instantly became my primary camera, with the D200 relegated to a 2nd body/backup, and effectively took the mantle as the leading DX camera in Nikons lineup from the Nikon D2xs. With the D300 we can go to ISO 400 (and sometimes beyond), combined with its amazing AF system and 8 f.p.s., it produces a much higher keeper rate for action/wildlife photography than my Nikon D200 can. Almost two years on, it remains our go-to camera for any telephoto work, and we don't see that changing any time soon.

Nikon D90

In 2008, we added a D90 - the video mode was interesting, and the logic being it had a slightly improved version of the D300 sensor, so would potentially make a better backup/2nd body than the D200. The Nikon D90 is capable of producing some outstanding videos, but in terms of ultimate quality and ease of use, its video mode is no match for my Sony Camcorder on a day-to-day basis. Also being smaller/lighter, the D90 appeared to be a very versatile and capable camera to add to our kit, especially if traveling light. It also turned out to be the first DSLR that She Who Must Be Obeyed has ever felt comfortable using, due to its small size and Auto modes, so my biggest challenge with the D90 is often finding a way to pry it out of her hands. When I can get hold of it, it's a solid performer, although the camera has frustrated me at times - more on this in the review later.

Nikon D700

When the D700 initially came out, I initially discounted it - most of my work is telephoto, the D700 puts far fewer "pixels on target" with any given lens than any of the other cameras mentioned here, and I didn't really need the low light capabilities (For over 2 decades, I very rarely shot anything faster than ISO 200). However, as of early 2009, the D700 price had dropped by over 25%. Having a FX camera would be very useful for doing future lens reviews on this site, and its high ISO abilities would open up new opportunities for us on occasion, so I finally broke down and added a Nikon D700 and another MB-D10 grip to our kit - a decision I haven't regretted. Since buying the D700, the D300 remains my go-to camera for telephoto work (which is 80%+ of our photography), but the D700 has become the default camera for just about everything else, it has certainly exceeded my expectations. It also means the D200 is getting very little use these days.

Over the coming weeks we'll be adding full field reviews/tests for each of these cameras, detailing how they've performed and what issues I've experienced with each one, followed by ISO comparisons and some more direct comparisons and conclusions. If you check back on this page, links will appear at the top and bottom of this article as new sections are added. We'll also periodically update these pages as the cameras continue to be used and abused, and add any new DSLR's that get added to our kit - the rumored D700x looks very interesting indeed, assuming I can sneak it in the house without the wife finding out.

Does the Nikon D90 make a good beginners camera?

My first camera was a Pentax SP1000 about 25 years ago. After taking my first roll of film, I remember very clearly the anticipation waiting to get that first roll back. Then the disappointment a couple of days later looking at a series of blurred, badly exposed prints, and not a single keeper.

My wife is a different story. Over the years she has expressed an interest in using an SLR. Back when my main camera was a Nikon F3HP, it was too big, too heavy and too complex. Back in 2006 when I got a D200, the camera was still too big, heavy, and complex for her. But that all changed last fall when the D90 arrived.

As she has proved, the Nikon D90 is perhaps the most versatile DSLR ever made, and perfect for a wide range of users.

Nikon F Mount History

The table in this article outlines which lenses support which functions with which Nikon DSLR cameras. Please note, there are exceptions to this, for example certain fisheye lenses protrude too far into the camera body, and may damage the mirror/lens, lenses designed for the Nikon F3AF system may not work, certain reflex lenses may not physically fit and so forth. Please check the manual for both the camera and lens before trying to mount.

Nikon D90 First Impressions

Like a lot of other people, we got fed up with waiting for the Nikon D90 body we'd ordered to ship, so we cancelled it and ordered the Nikon D90 with the 18-105mm VR kit instead. It arrived today, and at first glance it's better than we expected.

Nikon D300 Memory Card Tests

We tested the following memory cards, the Lexar Professional 300x, and SanDisks Ultra II, Extreme III, Extreme IV and Extreme Ducati, in a Nikon D300 with MB-D10 to see which card performs best in the camera. Shooting RAW, the SanDisk Ducati and Extreme IV cards were virtually identical, the Lexar Professional 300x a little slower than both. For shooting JPEG, these 3 cards were virtually identical.

Nikon D200 Memory Card Tests

We tested the following memory cards, the Lexar Professional 300x, and SanDisks Ultra II, Extreme III, Extreme IV and Extreme Ducati, in a Nikon D200 to see which card performs best in the camera. The results surprised us a little - as expected, the SanDisk Ducati was the fastest, but the Extreme IV was right there with it. The Lexar Professional 300x (also rated at 45MB/sec like the Ducati card) under performed - not only was it noticeably slower than the Extreme IV, the 8Gb version also holds almost 200Mb less images than the same sized SanDisk cards.
