Just Released: Canon EOS 60D Firmware Version 1.1.0

Release Notes:

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

1. Fixes a phenomenon where the wireless built-in flash settings are reset to defaults when the battery is removed from the camera.

2. Fixes an intermittent phenomenon where image-rotation information is not recognized correctly when shooting with the camera in the vertical position depending on the timing of the shutter release.

According to CR, the 5D Mark III is far from finalized, and will arrive no sooner than Feb 2012.

Rumors for this camera are all over the place, as they are for the Nikon D800. So far we have not seen anything we could consider credible.

Canon EOS 1D Mark V Rumor: Mid September

CR has received a tip that the 1D Mark V will be announced mid September, available at the end of October. It will be a full frame high f.p.s. camera with "digital cropping mode" that will "lead to" the amalgamation of the 1Ds/1D line.

CR gives the rumor their low CR1 rating.

[Via Photography Bay] - Apparently the infamous Bryan Peterson himself has got on the rumor bandwagon. According to a post on his facebook page:

Two new Nikon's-The D800, at 20MP, full frame, retail price of $2495.00 and Nikon DX-4, full frame at 19-20MP with a retail price of $5,000.00 and both will be announced by late September 2011!

Not really sure what to make of this. Given current exchange rates the prices seem too low ($2,999 and $5,499 would be more realistic we think), the timing seems off (August is expected), the DX-4 name is clearly wrong since DX points to the smaller sensors, and a D400/D4 combination is expected over the summer, with the D800 coming later...

Nikon D4 Rumor: Will Use A Sony Sensor

According to SonyAlphaRumors, the new D4 expected in August will use a Sony sensor tweaked by Nikon engineers. They are expecting either 24 or 36mp.

They give the rumor a SR4 rating (SR5 being the highest).

This would be a major departure for Nikon, since the D3 sensor was home grown by Nikon (although the 24mp D3x sensor was based on a Sony sensor). If they had stated the D4x will be based on the alleged 36mp Sony sensor, that would seem potentially credible. However the D4 itself is more likely to be in the 18-24 mp range, and is widely expected to be a Nikon design, especially after the success they had with the D3 and D3s sensors.

Nikon D4 Rumor: August 2011

NR has posted a rumor they give 70% probability to, that the widely expected August announcement will be for a D4 and D400 (mirroring the D3/D300 announcement from 2007, when both cameras were launched sharing the new CAM3500 autofocus system).

Also in the posted rumor, NR claims his source says 2012 for the D700 replacement.

Our take: D4 and D400 in August wouldn't surprise anyone - in fact if they don't come in August it will be more of a surprise. As for the D700 replacement (D800?), that could be next week, or could be a year away. The D700 came out a few months after the D3, sharing the same sensor, so that lends itself towards speculation that the D800 will have the D4 sensor, and come out a few months later (probably 6-9 months). However the D700 is widely believed to have cannibalized D3 sales, hence no D700s with the D3s sensor. If this is true, we can expect the D800 to be something other than a mini-D3.

Nikon D4x DSLR Rumor: 32Mp Sony Sensor

NR is speculating that the D3s replacement may be based on a rumored 32mp sensor that may appear in a rumored Sony Alpha A920 camera.

While Nikon does indeed work closely with Sony on sensor development for many of its cameras, this is currently merely speculation based on a rumor.

Canon EOS 3D Rumor: Full Frame, Early 2012

According to NI, a new sensor design will debut in a new Full Frame camera in early 2012 called the 3D.

Rumors of a 3D have been around for many years, so currently have no reason to view this as any more credible than anything else out there, but also have no reason to discount the rumor completely either.

Nikon D400 Rumor: 24Mp Sony Sensor

NR is speculating that the D400 may be based on a rumored 24mp sensor that may appear in a rumored Sony Alpha A77 camera (expected in July).

While Nikon does indeed work closely with Sony on sensor development for many of its cameras, this is currently merely speculation based on a rumor. If true, it would also be a departure from Nikon's practice of using the same sensor in the 'prosumer' and 'advanced consumer' models.

New Gimbals From Wimberley

Wimberley have just sent out a news release, a full copy of which can be found below. Wimberley makes outstanding products, we've used their Sidekick and Telephoto Flash Brackets extensively in all weathers, and their Gimbal products are relied upon by many of the big-name pro's. The new product set introduces a Side-Mount Gimbal.

The case for using side-mounted gimbals is compelling: not only do you have to haul around less weight (the side-mount is about a full pound lighter), but it also has better vibration control (by eliminating an arm from a full gimbal setup, and thus the vibration associated with it). On the downside, you loose the height adjustment to perfectly balance your lens, and it can be harder to mount larger telephoto lenses in a side mount Gimbal.

In addition to the new Side-Mount Gimbal, Wimberley have also released a kit to convert your existing Wimberley Version II Gimbal into a Side Mount, and an arm to allow the Side Mount to be used as a full Gimbal, covering all the bases.

Canon EOS 1D Mark V Rumor: No 1D Mark IV

According to CR, there will be no more 1D cameras after the next 1Ds Camera, and there will be no more APS-H bodies. They also imply this will happen in 2011.

CR gives this their CR2 rating, which means he believes there is some credibility to the rumor. Rumors of the 1D and 1Ds lines merging have been around forever, but without a new disruptive technology it is hard to imagine getting both high resolution and stellar low light ability out of one sensor (pixel binning to get the high-ISO ability perhaps?)

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Rumor: Replaced with 2 Cameras

CR is suggesting that the 5D Mark II may be replaced with 2 cameras, one optimized for stills, the other for video.

They rate the rumor as CR2, so he believes it has at least some credibility. If the cameras are really optimized separately, then that implies different body shapes and control layouts - one of them basically becomes a video camera with interchangeable lenses like the Sony camera. Going this direction makes sense, but you'd hardly call this camera a '5D'...

Release Notes:

Firmware Version 2.0.9 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
1. Improves writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
2. Fixes a phenomenon where the IS function will not work when custom function C.Fn III-2 is set to [5: IS start] and the lens attached does not have an AF stop button. This is because custom function C.Fn III-2 allows users to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens
3. Corrects misspellings in the menu screens displayed in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai languages.

Release Notes:

Improves writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
Fixes a phenomenon where the ability to shoot movies may be stopped under the following conditions:
- When using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards with little available space remaining and the user attempts to start shooting movies; or
- When the camera�(TM)s battery is removed and reinserted into the camera and the user immediately attempts to start shooting movies.
Corrects misspellings in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese languages (applies to models outside of the the Japanese market only).

The Single Side Lens Support System:

The Double Side Lens Support System:

Both lens support systems feature sliders that adjusts to better fit and give optimal support to your specific telephoto lens. The single sided Lens Support System gives your lens 2 points of support (the lens foot and a forward support), and for really big telephotos and/or maximum support the double sided Lens Support System gives 3 points of support for maximum stability: the lens foot, forward of the lens, and rearward towards the camera body.

Just Released: Canon EOS T3i 600D Firmware Version 1.0.1

Release Notes:

Changes in this firmware: Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fixes and changes. 1. Clarifies the feature guide description of the digital zoom function for movie-shooting that appears on the camera's LCD monitor. 2. Fixes a phenomenon in which, in rare cases, a computer connected to the camera with a USB cable cannot recognize the camera.
The Firmware Version 1.0.1 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.0.0. If the camera's firmware is already version 1.0.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Q&A section: Preparations for the Firmware Update:
In the folder for the firmware you downloaded are the firmware (file name: CCF11101.FIR, file size: 12,232,076 bytes) and instructions for the firmware update procedures (a PDF file in five languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese). Before starting the firmware update procedures, please be sure to carefully confirm your understanding of these instructions.

Below are some sample images from the Canon EOS 60D. These were taken with the supplied 18-135mm kit lens with default settings - exactly as the camera comes out of the box. It should be noted that any photograph is a result of the camera and lens working together, and the 18-135mm lens is one of the lower end lenses in Canon's lineup. It should also be noted that simple post processing can tweak the colors and improve sharpness, but what we wanted to show here is what the camera produces as Canon provides it, and not a demonstration of our post processing skills (or lack thereof).

In this section we'll look at some of the key features of the Canon EOS 60D:

Autofocus

The 60D has 9 cross-type autofocus points. The fact it only has 9 AF points can be limiting if you are trying to carefully compose a shot and want to put an AF point over a specific area (an eye for example - sharp eyes can make or break a picture). However the fact the are all cross-type AF points is extremely good, giving better accuracy whether the camera is oriented in the portrait or landscape position. In low light conditions, autofocus was noticeably better than we've experienced with cameras like the Nikon D200 and Nikon D90, and comparable to our Nikon D7000 and D300.

Canon EOS 60D Review - Conclusion & Recommendations

Overall the Canon EOS 60D is a solid performer. With an impressive 18mp resolution and snappy autofocus system, the 60D is capable of producing impressive results in all but the most demanding shooting environments.

The video implementation is relatively comprehensive, one of the best we've seen in a DSLR to date, and again capable of producing exceptional results in the right hands. The tilt/swivel flip screen only makes video recording easier. The biggest weakness is the lack of continuous autofocus during video recording - if you are expecting to be able to take videos of your kids running round the back yard then you'd be better served with a consumer grade video HD camera, at a fraction of the cost.

Overall, the Canon EOS 60D is a solid all round camera, the phrase that comes to mind is "Jack of All Trades, but Master of None". In the sub $1,000 category, the 60D is possibly the best all-rounder available today. We'll expand on this below, in our Recommendations section, outlining the 60D's suitability to different applications.

Canon EOS 60D Review - Handling

The image below shows the Canon 60D in between the Nikon D300 and Nikon D7000:

Upon taking the 60D out of the box, the first thing that surprised me was the size. I was expecting something closer to the compact D7000 size, but instead it is about the same width as the D300. The finger grip is also a little deeper than the Nikon's, so for photographers with larger hands the Canon 60D is very comfortable. However my wife has smaller hands and took an instant dislike to the grip, claiming it was too big and wasn't nearly as comfortable. Part of that may be her familiar with the Nikon D90 and D7000.

Canon EOS 60D Review - Intro & Specs

The Canon EOS 60D was announced in August 2010, and is the 'advanced consumer' or 'enthusiast' model in Canon's DSLR lineup. The EOS 60D replaced the EOS 50D and continues a line of digital SLR cameras that began with the EOS 10D back in 2003. The 60D offers numerous improvements over the 50D it replaced, most notably a new 18mp sensor (up from the 50D's 15mp), improved low light/high ISO abilities and a new articulating LCD screen. Construction of the camera changed from the 50D's magnesium alloy body to a smaller and lighter polycarbonate resin with glass fibre body on an aluminum chassis. The 60D also ditches CompactFlash cards in favor of the smaller SD (or SDHC or SDXC) cards.

However the burst rate actually dropped to 5.3 frames per second (the 50D boasted 6.3 f.p.s.), and the micro-AF adjust feature, which allows you to compensate for lenses that either front or back focus, was dropped completely. As such the older 50D was often considered more of a 'prosumer' body, however that title now belongs to the Canon 7D, with the 60D slotting in underneath it as the 'enthusiast' model instead.

ISO Comparison - Nikon D7000, D700, D300 and Canon 60D, S90

Introduction

It's been about 18 months since we last did a side-by-side ISO test, so with some newer cameras available to us, here are some new results. All cameras were used in their default settings. The Nikons (D300, D700, D7000) all used the excellent 70-200mm f2.8 II lens at f/8. The Canon 60D used the only lens we have available, the kit 18-135mm also at f/8, which is perhaps not the best performer. The S90 used the built in lens zoomed out. All cameras used their on-board flash.

Unlike last time, when the D90 and D200 struggled to autofocus, all of the cameras in this test did a much better job (AF fine tune was not used).

We've attempted to frame all of the shots approximately the same (the one issue being the minimum focus distance of the 70-200mm was too long to let the D700 'get as close' to the test subject). In the last test, the cameras were all in the 10-12mp range, however in this test we have cameras at 10, 12, 16 and 18mp, meaning the center 100% crops appear at different sizes.

Busted: Nikon D800 Rumor - Late March/Early April

Status:

According to Thom, Nikon's next *big* announcement will be late March or early April. Since the D4/D400 aren't expected until late summer, and Thom's previous speculation that a D800 should be here before that, then if correct, the D800 is a very likely candidate. However whether this is based on solid information or just speculation is unclear...

A DPReview forum poster (see source link below) claims a Nikon Tech Support Rep claimed the D700 replacement would be here March/April, around 16-18mp, and all for only $2k.

Nikon D4 Rumor: Early 2012

According to Quesabesde (or at least a bad Google translation of), the D4 could be delayed until early 2012. They blame the earthquake for the delay.

While this makes perfect sense, we have no way of verifying one way or the other. It is unclear from the Google translation whether they are claiming or just speculating on the delay. Nikon is not under any real pressure from Canon to release the D4, since the 1D Mark IV didn't exactly leapfrog (or depending on how you look at it, even catch up) with the D3s, a delay shouldn't hurt market share. However failing to get the current D3s into the hands of customers with cash could...

Nikon D800 Rumor: October or Later

According to Quesabesde (or at least a bad Google translation of), the D700 replacement has been delayed to the final months of the year (October at the earliest, but almost certainly before the years end. They also suggest the resolution will me much higher than 18mp. They blame the earthquake for the delay.

While this makes perfect sense, we have no way of verifying one way or the other, we are still no seeing anything that looks even remotely solid pointing to a D800 launch.

Canon EOS 1D Mark V Rumor: Merged 1D and 1Ds lines

CR is reporting the merged 1D line (i.e. 1D and 1Ds in the same camera) will happen sooner than expected, and will require new tech to have both lots of megapixels and high frame rate.

The rumor of the merging of the two pro lines has been around for many years now, and the 'new tech' is nothing new - your hi-resolution camera has smaller photosites which limit light gathering ability (i.e. high ISO), and the large number of pixels tax your processing power and data throughput. Your high speed camera uses larger photosites (better ISO performance) and generates less data (fewer megapixels) given a much faster performing camera. Merging those two into one is always going to be somewhat challenging, especially with current designs.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Rumor: Being Tested

CR is reporting that select photographers are getting the 5D Mark III for testing.

If correct, this puts a launch probably in the late summer/fall range (at the earliest).

CR also comments that the 26-28mp range seems most likely, with more focus on high ISO ability and image quality.

Just Released: Canon EOS 7D Firmware Version 1.2.5

Release Notes:

Firmware Version 1.2.5 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were rare cases where movie files taken could not be opened when repeatedly shooting movies with specific CF cards.
2. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were cases where "Err 02" appeared when repeatedly shooting still images with specific CF cards.
3. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery was removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempted to start shooting movies immediately, shooting would stop.
4. Improved the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
5. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when custom function C.Fn 4-1 was set to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function would not work.
6. Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Rumor: January 2012 or May 2011

According to NI, they have received info that the 1Ds Mark III replacement is scheduled for August 2011, and the 5D Mark III as a January 2012 announcement. Then they cite a different source pointing to a 'big announcement' within the next few weeks.

Rumors are still all over the place for both of these cameras, which usually means they are at a minimum a few months out, possibly longer. Of course the problems in Japan (including the potential for rolling blackouts through September) adds even more uncertainty to the mix.

Nikon D7000 Firmware Version 1.02

Just Released: Nikon D7000 Firmware Version 1.02

Release Notes:

Noise reduction processing is now performed with shutter speeds slower than 1 s (previously 8 s) when On is selected for Long Exp. NR in order to reduce the bright spots that occur with shooting still images at slow shutter speeds.
An issue that prevented the opening of movies recorded with the D7000 in certain movie editing software applications has been resolved.
When the camera was connected to a television via the A/V cable and a movie was played back, playback was normal the first time but when the movie was played two or more times, the sound was played back at extremely low volume and seemed to play intermittently. This issue has been resolved.
When white balance for RAW images created using the camera's image overlay function was fine tuned with Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the images acquired a magenta cast. This issue has been resolved.
An issue that caused 0.00" to be displayed for heading information when the GP-1 GPS unit was connected to the camera has been resolved so that ---.-- is now displayed.
When Viewfinder virtual horizon was the role assigned to the Fn button or the preview button and the applicable button was pressed, errors in the virtual horizon indicator were displayed. This issue has been resolved.
The following errors in Help displays have been resolved.
- "Maximum sensitivity" help was displayed for shooting menu>ISO sensitivity settings>On or Off help.
- German help displayed "Select focus priority for AF-S mode." for Custom Settings>a1: AF-C priority selection help.

Nikon MH-19 Dual Travel Charger

The now discontinued MH-19 Dual Travel Charger from Nikon charges two EN-EL3e or EN-EL3 batteries, so works with just about every pro-sumer and advanced consumer body Nikon made up until the D7000. That includes many recent (as of the time of writing) cameras including the D200, D300, D300s, D700 and D90 - some of Nikons most popular models.

The MH-19 comes packages as shown above, in perhaps one of the ugliest boxes Nikon has ever made. It comes complete with two cables (at least the U.S. version does), one that plugs into the cigarette/power socket found in just about any car globally, and a power lead for mains power. The unit automagically detects the input voltage, so will work just about anywhere in the world (with appropriate plug adapter) with input voltages in the 110-240V AC, 50-60Hz range.

This alone makes the MH-19 a very versatile tool, especially for the traveler. It does have its drawbacks however. First of all, the unit is physically large, which makes it harder to pack and travel with. Secondly, if you put two batteries in the unit, it only charges them one at a time, and not particularly quickly. So if you can plug in two batteries to be charged and forget about it for a while, when you come back they both should be charged. But if you wanted to charge two at the same time and get back out shooting quickly, then you are out of luck.

Bottom line, the product works, and gives you a Nikon branded travel charger that will work just about anywhere on the planet, providing you stay close to your car or truck. However from a design perspective the unit would have a lot more appeal as a travel charger if it was significantly smaller, and preferably charged both batteries at once. If interested, despite being discontinued, the MH-19 chargers are still occasionally available on both Amazon and eBay:

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Rumor: Specs

NI have posted some specs, and if correct around mid-year we'll have a new 26mp, 102,400 ISO body with 19 AF points, 4.9 f.p.s and other minor improvements.

We are unfamiliar with the source they link too, so whether this is real or an attempt to generate traffic is unclear.

HEJZAL Monopod Head

If you turn back the clock only a few months, you were extremely limited in your choice of monopod heads. If you only ever shot horizontally with a monopod (landscapes, motor racing etc.) then either attaching the monopod directly to the camera, or simply using an Arca Style clamp on top of the monopod worked just fine. However that setup isn't flexible and doesn't work very well when you need to tilt your camera up or down (e.g. macro, aviation, birds in flight, even architectural photography). While some people use them, ball heads used "loose" on monopods can be a royal pain to operate (if you don't believe me, just try panning and keeping the horizon level with a loose ball head on a monopod).

Falls into the "must be true, cuz I read it in a forum" category. Rumors right now are very slow indeed, and the impact of the March disasters in Japan are not yet fully known, hence unlikely forum postings being so widely reported...

NR has info on D5100's being shipped to Canada, and expects the official announcement to be on 4th April or 2nd week of April.

Sounds about right to us, the camera is certainly due.

NR has obtained a photo showing some stacked Nikon boxes marked D5100. The fact a D5100 may be coming soon should surprise no-one, but if real this photo could mean the D5100 is very close to launch and inventory is being stock-piled.

Busted: Nikon D5100 Rumor - Wil use D3100 Sensor

Status:

According to specs posted by NR, the D5100 will come with the sensor out of the D3100 and have 1080p video, swivel screen etc.

Nikon are well know to reuse sensors, so that makes perfect sense (the other candidate was the D7000 sensor, but that is more likely to be used in the D400).
