Below are our current recommendations for purchasing Canon cameras. Please note, these recommendations are speculative, and are based on a combination of our opinions, the prior release history of cameras from Canon, and in some cases rumors we believe to be credible. DSLR | Recommendation | Buy From | Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III: | Recommendation: Wait Reason: We don't expect the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark IV to be announced until several months after the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV announcement (10/20/09), so at the earliest we'd expect the 1Ds Mark IV at the very end of 2009 or start of 2010, possibly later.
However, if you are interested in this camera, you may also want to consider the Canon EOS 5D Mark II if high resolution image quality is your primary goal, and you can live without the pro quality body. Released: Aug 29th, 2007 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS 1D Mark IV: | Recommendation: Buy Reason: The Canon 1D Mark III had a production run of almost 3 years - if the Mark IV is the same, don't expect a replacement until 2012. Released: Oct 20th, 2009 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS 5D Mark II: | Recommendation: Buy Reason: The original EOS 5D was announced in August 2005, more than 3 years before the 5D Mark II was announced. If the pattern continues, the 5D Mark III won't be here until 2011. Released: Sep 17th, 2008 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS 7D: | Recommendation: Buy Reason: New in Fall 2009, if Canon see this as a replacement for the 60D, then the earliest a replacement would arrive is Fall 2010. However by changing the name we suspect Canon are looking at a longer product life, the 5D series appears to be on a 3 year release cycle, so we'd expect an update in 2011 or maybe even 2012 to be more likely. Released: Sep 1st, 2009 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS 50D: | Recommendation: Wait Reason: The Canon EOS XXD line appears to be on a 12 month release cycle, which means the Canon EOS 60D could be announced as soon as late August or September 2009. Released: Aug 26th, 2008 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS Rebel Xsi: | Recommendation: Wait Reason: We expect this model to be discontinued soon, due to the recent Canon EOS T1i (500D) and the imminently rumored Canon T1 (2000D), together becoming the new Canon entry-level DSLR line-up. Released: Jan 23rd, 2008 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon EOS Rebel T1i 500D: | Recommendation: Buy Reason: One of the newest cameras in the Canon lineup, we don't expect this model to be replaced until very late 2010 or 2011. Released: Mar 25th, 2009 More Info: Overview, Reviews, Price History
| | Canon Rebel XS: | Recommendation: Wait Reason: We expect this model to be discontinued soon, due to the recent Canon EOS T1i (500D) and the imminently rumored Canon T1 (2000D), together becoming the new Canon entry-level DSLR line-up.
