End for the Nikon D40, D300?
One statement in yesterdays press release for the new 35mm DX really jumped out at me:
“Lightweight, compact and affordable, this lens can easily become a fast favorite for any level of photographer, and is the perfect complement to D60 users who are just starting to learn D-SLR photography or enthusiasts who love their D90.’.
This jumped out at me for two reasons:
- The use of “any level of Photographer” with the Nikon D90 being used as the high end of the range, not the Nikon D300. Now it’s well known that the D400 will be announced before summer (otherwise Amazon will be selling books for a non-existent camera – see here). Not mentioning the D300 kinda makes sense if it’s about to be replaced, however mentioning it as a placeholder for the Nikon D400 still has value. Unless that is, the D400 is not a DX camera. This is pure speculation, and a stretch at that, I don’t see any good reason why Nikon would not want a high pixel density prosumer DX camera for its pro telephoto users.
- The Nikon D40 is the current entry level camera, so is this a hint that the Nikon D40 is going to be discontinued, with the D60 becoming the new entry level (possibly with a price cut?). This could also mean a new camera just above the Nikon D60 could be coming.
Pure speculation, but both the Nikon D300 and Nikon D40 were highly conspicuous by their absence in the press release.
